As the Wellness Director at Aura Body, I get asked a lot “How can I help my teen be healthy?” And as a mother of 3, I totally understand the struggle we as parents have in this role.
My first piece of advice is to make sure you are setting a good example. Start by making sure you are eating healthy and exercising. If you can’t do that, why would your children think they should? Children are like sponges and they absorb what is in their surroundings.
Secondly, don’t make any BIG changes right away. Start slowly and plant seeds. Start by slowly taking away some of the sugary and carb loaded snacks in the house and replace them with healthy alternatives. Grapes instead of fruit snacks, whole grains instead of over-processed foods, and lean protein in place of proteins that are higher in fat content. This is what I call seed planting… By encouraging your children to make healthy choices on their own, it’s a pattern they can continue into adulthood. And you will save your sanity in the process!
Encourage your children to find something they are passionate about and that they enjoy when it comes to exercise. Have them try out for school sports or find a class at a local gym or fitness camp. It might take several tries before they find their niche. I have been to countless softball games, soccer camps, dance recitals, and karate tournaments! It can be exhausting, but seeing the joy on your child’s face when they find their passion is priceless!
Hydration is something we also tend to overlook as parents. Water is key! Replace the juices and sodas with water. It’s an easy fix. Sure, you will get tired of water bottles everywhere, but the benefit far outweighs the irritation.
At Aura Body, we also offer some great resources for your parenting tool belt. We have our Ideal Body 360 genetic testing. This is my most offered suggestion for the struggling parent and teen. This simple test done by a cheek swab can help us identify a variety of information about your teen. In 4-6 weeks when the results come back, we can find out what kind of diet would be best for your teen’s nutritional goals, what kind of exercise program would work best for them, and what kind of vitamins and minerals they may be lacking in. The results are specific to their genetic make-up and are good for a lifetime!
A good multivitamin is also a great thing to incorporate into your teens daily routine. Don’t go buy the gummies vitamins or the over the counter vitamins – often times these are loaded with sugar and fillers. Do your research and make sure you know what is in your teens and your own vitamins. At Aura Body, we offer a variety and even have monthly plans that allow us to mail them directly to you! It doesn’t get any easier than that. My favorite vitamins for teens are of course our multivitamin, but also our DIM vitamin. DIM is great for hormonal imbalances, and we all know teen’s hormones tend to fluctuate. DIM controls hormones in men and women and even helps with acne.
As parents, it’s up to us to lay down a good foundation for our children. It may seem daunting, but if we don’t take care of our children, who will take care of us as we age?
